Managing Stress in Sales: A Balancing Act
In today’s sales environment, where the global market demands are hitting us from every angle, it is no surprise that stress becomes part of our daily routine. There are many ways to deal with it, and some people manage it differently than others. To be successful in this industry, it is extremely important that you learn how to manage stress and that you find your own secret recipe to counter its negative aspects.
On a basic level, you can improve your level of stress by implementing certain lifestyle changes. For example, specialists generally agree that regular exercise and lowering your intake of alcohol and caffeine will help your body’s response to stress.
But truly taking control over your stress is not as easy as not having that second (or third!) coffee in the morning. In order to properly manage your stress, you have to achieve a balance between your Head, Body and Soul. Should one of them not be in balance, the two others will be negatively affected as well.
A well-aligned salesperson will inevitably be more successful because all three components will work in sync: your Head will be more focused and enable you to find the best solutions for your clients, your Soul will provide the emotions and feelings you need to properly communicate your solutions and also provide you happiness on the job, and a healthy Body will allow you to be present and devoted to your clients.
It is critical that the Body be the first priority in order for the two others to function properly. This is why there is so much written about the benefits of daily exercise to keep the body in shape.
However, even if you are the healthiest you have ever been, the two other aspects cannot be neglected. For example, we often hear athletes mention that their sport is a “mental game”. That’s because their Body is there to respond to the physical demands, but the Head Game is the ultimate challenge to win the gold medal. It is the same thing in sales.
If you are unhappy at work or at home, your emotions will have a great impact on your day. Consequently, your Head will not be able to perform to assess and deliver solutions to clients and your Soul will be affected as your overall satisfaction level plummets. As the saying goes, “You can’t give what you don’t have!”
A misalignment between Head, Body and Soul will inevitably transpire to your clients, who will prefer to do business with somebody more serene who keeps a great balance and delivers better sales presence and results.
Keep exercising, love your clients and your job, and be happy in life!
